Dear All, I am just back from a 4 day visit in Lisbon, where we pitched for our fast-growing startup project – www.look4dog.com/ . It’s a super elastic search engine for litters and puppies of purebred dog kennels associated with the FCI/AKC/The UK Kennel Club. We’ve got 2500 kennels in our database already, but the market is huge to be covered yet (almost 1m professional kennels worldwide!). We’re active in 13 countries already and once we manage to get financing as we plan, there’s going to be much more of them! 5 language versions already and 2 more coming soon. Apart from our pitching I treated WebSummit also as a big opportunity catch up with the latest Tech and Investing trends. What I saw in Lisbon was literally mindblowing! over 40k people, over 1500 startups, enormous number of lectures and panels on the latest trends in the technology space as well as the Venture Capital and investing trends. @eToro was one of the event’s main partners and its booth was great and pretty busy all the time as well. It was a pleasure for me to get to know other fellow Popular Investors including @MJ_Lux , @Wesl3y and @JeppeKirkBonde . Jeppe & Marcin – was great talking to you and hear your experiences! Keep the good job you’re doing 👍.
Now to the point.
The most eye-opening for me during WebSummit was the following:
👉 People at my age (I am 41) and my traditional investing mindset have absolutely overslept the last 5-7 years in terms of ignoring the unprecedented rise of blockchain and crypto. Whether you think cryptos are a real investable asset as other traditional assets like equities, bonds or commods or you think this market has a Ponzi-scheme structure, you have to admit (and I just have) that 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. I wasn’t even partially aware that the crypto community is just sooo massive! In one of the panels for approximately 500+ people, once the speaker asked who owns $BTC, 80% of the people raised hands!! Astonishing…Now I understand that investing in cryptos is all about growing the community, but I was genuinely not even aware that this world is just so big and so many people actually do invest in cryptos.
👉 Blockchain technology is evolving rapidly and improving constantly. Venture capitalists invest heavily in this sector as well, so it’s not just a market for retail geeks anymore. It is getting seriously institutionalized – VCs, banks, mututal funds and corporations – all are on board now. This obviously makes the whole trend of crypto technology growth much more sustainable in the long run. An extremely interesting discussion I participated on new blockchain protocles was another one that made my jaw fall to the floor. Proof of Stake instead of Proof of Work ($BTC is based on this), Non Fungible Tokens (NTFs) and many more phenomena – these are completely new worlds opening in front of our eyes! Truely amazing…
👉 Startups – another amazing trend. The amounts of money in the ecosystem are just so abundant these days that it’s as easy as never before in human history for every single one of us – be it you or me – to become an enterpreneur and start a new fascinating journey of your lifetime. Venture Capital and Private Equity funds are flooded with capital, this capital needs to be invested in search for high long-term returns. Cash burns hands these days with such negative real interest rates. Capital is on the hunt for returns – literally. The astronomus amounts of investable capital – the supply – naturally creates demand. There’s been over 1500 startups at the WebSummit. Hords of young, intelligent and forward-looking people dreaming of becoming the next unicorn, some of them already their way to it (the Beta and Growth startups). Most of them have brave ideas and use cutting-edge technologies. The situation in this ecosystem we live in these days is a sweet spot for enterpreneurs. Capital knows no borders, the world got flat and easily accessible, technology is there ready to be used anytime. Just be brave, have an idea and follow your path conseqently!
I invite every single one of you to participate in this event (next one in 2022), should you not have done this yet. Eye-opening, mindblowing, amazing. The world runs at a pace like never before.
